Julian was born and educated in the United Kingdom and emigrated to Australia in 1981. He has since divided his time more or less evenly between Australia and New Zealand. Before his move into the wine industry, Julian had a long and successful career in advertising.

In 1998, while living in New Zealand, he decided to make the promotion of high quality New Zealand wines and wineries the principal focus for his business activities. After taking a 2 year course in viticulture and winemaking in Hawkes Bay, he established WineWrite, a wine marketing and communications consultancy based in Auckland.

In 2004, he returned to Australia and his association with WineStream began soon after. His principal responsibilities at WineStream are developing and writing newsletters and websites. He is also an enthusiastic participant in any good quality wine tastings he can secure an invite to.
